At long, long last -- news!

Post-production has just completed on Drive: The Story of the Vulgar Boatmen, a feature-length documentary about everyone's favorite indie band (or should that be Indy band?), the Vulgar Boatmen!  My friend, Chicago-based filmmaker Fred Uhter, directed and produced it, and I co-produced.  We've been working on this for over two years now, so it's great to have this finally completed.  Will have information about the premiere and additional screenings soon, I hope!

And speaking of indie music, The Wonder Show, my old radio show that refuses to die, has resumed airing (after a 9-year gap) via BlogTalkRadio.comI  Catch us every Thursday at 11:00 p.m. EST.

That might be enough news for some, but not me!  Plans are percolating in the background for a music video as well as a TV movie for a certain basic cable network.  I'd say more, but I don't want to jinx things!  For now, just cross your fingers and watch the skies!!!!

How time flies!

It's not been from the lack of news that's kept me from updating the website, far from it!  First off, I went and got myself married last November to my wonderful wife Jennifer.  Hooray for us!  But putting on a wedding in Manhattan is a task and a half, I can tell you (especially if you try to do it within a reasonable budget like us), so my life became one big wedding-shaped bundle for months and months with no time for film stuff.

But that is changing this year!  This year, I am officially incorporating Automated Beatnik Productions into its own corporation and embarking upon my most ambitious project: a feature film!  More information coming (I promise!) as the year progresses.

In the meantime, I took part in one of those "Film Racing" events in December with my longtime friend and producer Bill Hopkins and produced a cute little short film called "Think About the Future!"  Didn't win any of the major prizes, but it came in 7th overall in the Online contest and 1st in the Northeastern Region.  Which means I'm the best filmmaker in New York City, right?  (Well, *I* certainly like to think so.  Hopefully others will soon come around to my way of thinking, deluded as it may be...)

For those of you in the UK, my friend David Crawford and I made a rare appearance on BBC1 last Friday (4 May) on the children's television series "Totally Doctor Who!"  In our segment, we explained the concept of "forced perspective" with presenter Kirsten O'Brien while running around New York taking pictures of a miniature Dalek in front of several famous landmarks.  (For the photos that inspired the segment, check out the DWNY website.)

At any rate, it was loads of fun - check it out if you can!

Totally Doctor Who!
(L to R: David Crawford, Kirsten O'Brien, Dave's Dalek, me!)

Yes, for those of you who have never seen "Dale Crawford" or for those of you who still can't get enough of his rock'n'roll shenannigans, there are not one but TWO screenings coming up!

First off, "Dale" will be screening at the Garden State Film Festival in Asbury Park, NJ on Saturday, March 24 at 6:15 p.m. at Mattison Park (649 Marrison Avenue).

Then, later this spring, "Dale" will finally make its Manhattan premiere as part of the NewFilmmakers series on Wednesday, May 2 at 6:00 p.m. at the Anthology
Film Archives (32 Second Avene).

And don't forget, those "Wonder Show" shorts are coming up...well, as soon as we finish postproduction.  Which should be soon!  Very soon!  Stay tuned and keep watching the skies!!!

Happy New Year!

Been a busy, busy time for me lately -- in the past two months I've gotten engaged to my long-suffering girlfriend Jen (who can now look forward to being my long-suffering wife!), took a trip to Missouri, directed four short films with my old "Wonder Show" cohorts, and moved into a new apartment.

If that wasn't enough, "Dale Crawford: Musician/Detective" is having its New Jersey premiere next Tuesday, January 23, at the Symposia Bookstore in beautiful downtown Hoboken (510 Washington Street) at 8:00 p.m.  If you live in the area (or don't mind the schlep out to Hoboken), come on down -- it's free!

And while you're at it, all you people out there on MySpace -- be sure to check out the MySpace pages for Dale Crawford, The Wonder Show, and (last but not least) me

The official Dale Crawford trailer is up on the Dale Crawford page, for your viewing pleasure.  Dale is also going to have its big public premiere next month at the November Hoboken Digital Film Society meeting.  Will post the exact day and time once I find out for myself.

In other news, Jim Tudor's mindbending sci-fi short Zero/Ones (which I co-produced) is now available on YouTube

Well, after several false starts, Dale Crawford has finally wrapped filming!  Am now sending it out to festivals and such - watch this space for its official premiere and additional screenings all around the world.  (Maybe even near you!)

Three of my short films, "Zero/Ones", "Polka Trip" and "Network One" are being screened at the Symposia Bookstore in Hoboken, NJ by The Hoboken Digital Film Society next Thursday, July 13, at 8:00 p.m.  There is a suggested donation of $5, but there will be food provided, so it all balances out.  Hope to see you there!

And speaking of screenings, "Zero/Ones" makes its world permiere at the Flickerings Festival today at 10:00 a.m.  Good luck to the director, Jim Tudor, who will be at the screening signing autographs and handing out lashings of his famous homemade Jell-O casserole!

Last spring, I worked on the short film "Pregnant", written and directed by my friend Jonathan Skurnik (and starring Dale Crawford himself, Brad Lawrence).  And after several months of postproduction, it's finally having it's world permiere next Tuesday, April 25, at the Brooklyn Arts Council Film Festival!  It's part of a three-hour program of short films starting at 5:30 p.m.  Unfortunately, Jonathan can't make it himself, but in lieu of attending, he has asked me, Brad and the first A.D., Keith Chernin, to run the Q&A afterwards (should there be time for one) which should be something to see.  (I've promised Jonathan to answer everything as best I can, and if I don't know the answer, I'll at least make up something entertaining).  It's all free, so if you've got time, come on down to the Pratt Institute and catch some up-and-coming filmmaking talent.  Full details here.

After spending the last few months feeling like Punxsutawney Phil, peering outside my window every day to see if the leaves had started to bloom again so that work could resume on "Dale Crawford", the weather has finally changed for the better!  Yes, spring is here at last, and production is scheduled to resume mid-May.

And speaking of the changing seasons, film festival season is gearing up, and our very own "Zero/Ones" is all set to have its world premiere at the Flickerings Festival in beautiful scenic Bushnell, Illinois.  The exact date and time to be announced as the festival approaches.

In non-film news, I recently co-edited
the DWNY fanzine with my good friend and fellow filmmaker Jeff Cioletti, available online in PDF form from the Doctor Who New York website.  (Yes, it's all about "Doctor Who", everyone's favorite Sci-Fi channel program.)  I've also heard rumblings that the DWNY webmaster may soon be releasing some potentially very embarassing footage of me performing the "Doctor Who" theme song on accordion, but I'm sure there's nothing to these malicious rumors...

Finally, I just got an advance copy of Marykate O'Neil's new album and it's fantastic.  Do yourself a favor and pre-order it today, or pick up a copy at one of her upcoming live shows

Another set-back on
"Dale Crawford" - due to scheduling difficulties for exteriors, filming has been put temporarily on hold until Spring comes again and the landscape has a greater chance of looking a bit less like the winter wonderland it currently is.

In the meantime, the always delightful Marykate O'Neil (and her equally wonderful band, the Wicked Bomahs) went into the studio at the end of December to record the showstopping musical number for
"Dale Crawford".  Mixing and mastering to commence shortly!

12/1/05
The holiday season has taken its toll!  The release of "Zero/Ones" has been pushed back due to unexpected post-production delays.  Look for it in early 2006...

11/21/05
We had our first day of filming for "Dale Crawford" on Saturday.
Pictures of the shoot are up in the special photo section.

11/6/05
Pre-production has begun on "Dale Crawford: Musician/Detective", a 10-minute short shot on 24P video; shooting is scheduled within the next two weeks or so.  Full details on the Filmography page.

10/1/05
At long last!  Post-production has begun on "Zero/Ones", Jim Tudor's 16mm sci-fi drama which I am co-producing and editing.  It is our hope to hold its World Permiere in St. Louis on December 28.  Watch this space for all the details!
